FI — Finansinspektionen

Tracked byUpdated

Finansinspektionen (FI) is Sweden's integrated financial-services regulator overseeing banking, capital markets, insurance, pensions and consumer credit. FI supervises licensed investment firms and enforces MiFID II/MiFIR rules for retail forex and CFD providers operating in Sweden. The Riksbank (Sveriges Riksbank) handles monetary policy and the Swedish krona separately.

Jurisdiction
Kingdom of Sweden.
Founded
1991
Mandate
Established in 1991 under the Financial Supervision Authority Ordinance, consolidating predecessor banking and insurance supervisors. FI enforces the Securities Market Act (lagen om värdepappersmarknaden), the Banking and Financing Business Act, MiFID II via national implementation, and EU regulations directly applicable in Sweden. Coordinates with ESMA on EU technical standards and EBA on banking matters.
Consumer protection
Swedish Bank Deposit Guarantee Scheme covers up to SEK 1,050,000 per depositor (approximately €100,000 EUR-equivalent maintained at parity). Investor Compensation Scheme (Investerarskyddet) covers up to SEK 250,000 for securities held with insolvent investment firms. Negative balance protection mandatory for retail CFD clients under MiFID II.
Retail leverage caps
ESMA-aligned: 1:30 on major FX pairs, 1:20 on minors and gold, 1:10 on commodities and major indices, 1:5 on individual equities, 1:2 on crypto CFDs. FI enforces these via the Swedish implementation of ESMA's permanent product-intervention measures; binary options for retail are permanently prohibited.
Public register
FI maintains separate searchable registers for banks, securities firms, insurance companies, fund managers and consumer credit firms. Combine with the Bolagsverket (Swedish Companies Registration Office) for entity legal status. Open register
Dispute resolution
Allmänna reklamationsnämnden (ARN, the National Board for Consumer Disputes) handles consumer financial-services disputes — recommendations are non-binding but firms generally comply. Sveriges Konsumentbyrå (Konsumenternas Bank- och finansbyrå) provides advisory support. Swedish courts for unresolved disputes.
Editor notes
Sweden's retail FX/CFD market is moderate; major Nordic brokerages include Nordnet, Avanza Bank (both primarily securities/fund-trading focused) and IG Markets Sweden. Most international retail FX brokers serving Swedish residents use CySEC EU passports rather than direct FI authorisation. FI has been active on consumer-credit and crypto-fraud enforcement; FX-broker enforcement is coordinated with ESMA peers.
